Lodging suggestions for Bangkok & Chiang Mai
We will be in Thailand for 6 nights in January and are looking for recommendations for lodging in Bangkok & Chiang Mai. We prefer smaller 2-3 star facilities to the bigger hotels. We like to walk so location in the midst of things is also important. Thanks.

A couple of suggestions in Bangkok: S33 on Sukhumvit 33 and Grass Suites on Thonglor. The latter is supposed to be 4 stars but has some good deals. Shanghai Mansion in Chinatown and Loy Lalong also come to mind.

In Chiang Mai, I can heartily recommend Pat's Klangviang. It's an older guesthouse with character in a great part of the old city, across from an old wat. You can sit on the balcony if you get a street-side room, and watch the monks go about their business each morning. A good Thai or American breakfast is included in the rate, with the most delicious hot tea or coffee we had the entire trip. The front desk staff are friendly, and our room was very clean and comfortable. They even had internet access in the hall and a small library. After a leasiurly breakfast,it was a pleasant walk to everything, wats, shops, massage, night market, museums. I'd love to go back, great city.

I have stayed at the Adelphi Suites several times and that it good value for the money. It is a smaller hotel, but in a great locAtion with a nice restaurant on site. Pooli is small, but the gym is okay.

We stayed at the Centre Point Silom in Bangkok and Baan Orapin in Chiang Mai a few years ago. If they are still there I would highly recommend them.
CPS is right by the train station on the river and down the street from The Oriental. GREAT location and rooms are huge and clean!
Baan Orapin is almost like a B&B, very different feeling from a hotel but really lovely. Ideally located as well!

We are staying at Baan Orapin in a few weeks. Our interaction with the owner before even staying there has been lovely and he has been very helpful in planning our trip, answering questions and being informative about the accommodation choices.
