We will be spending 5 nights in Edinburgh and 2 in Glasgow in early Sep and want to find the best central locations for easy walking. Our budget will be between 100 to 150 pounds, preferably the lower range. We think we will want hotels and not guest houses in the cities since we will be staying in guest houses during our rural side trips with Rabbies.

Three in Glasgow I would recommmend that are both central and in your price range at that time are the Carlton George on West George St, around a 100m from George Square and 50m from Queen St station. The Malmaison at the other end of West George Street but still handy for Sauchiehall and Bath St. Marks Hotel on Bath St which again is very central and great base for seeing the city. All are 4 star and get decent reviews. Marks is showing at 92 pounds a night, the Carlton 113 and the Malmaison 123 per night at the end of the first week in September on Trivago.

There's little need to split your stay between two hotels as it's only an hour between the two cities. As for accommodation, I'd suggest the Apex on Waterloo Place - close to the train station / airport bus, close to most of what you would want to see but it's slightly off the beaten track so is reasonably quiet

We are flying home from Glasgow is the reason for both.

I had seen that Apex and it is definately in the running.
And, the Carlton Goerge looks very promising.

I thoroughly recommend the Carlton. Has a roof top dining area with good views across town.

its in Bruntsfield which is lovely mini inner city village in central edinburgh about 15 minutes walk from the central core of the old town.

I lived in Bruntsfield village and loved it and as you have 5 nights and Edinburgh is relatively small it might be a great spot for you- there are restaurants, delis, bars right on the street (but not noisy, this is a residential village rather than party town part of edinburgh). In the other direction from the hotel you have Morningside, also a very desirable part of Edinburgh thats nice to stroll around with little one off shops etc etc. This whole Bruntsfield/Morningside area is pretty and quaint i think

Edinburgh is very small in my opinion (coming from london) and as you have 5 days it might be nice to have the village lifestyle on your doorstep as well as quick walking access to the tourist attractions. I also personally think this area has that bit more character than the newer town bit on the other side of Princes Street, but that's just my opinion.

The walk to the super central bit takes you across "the Meadows" a pretty park.

Seems to be in budget and gets good reviews

I walked past it everyday at uni and used to always think that would be a good place to stay.

See what you think....

To give you a rough idea on distance, a taxi from waverley (you can easily walk but if you have luggage would recommend as Edinburgh is not particularly flat)

Just booked the Grasshopper in Glasgow for 105 pounds---3 hotels were full including the Carlton---something must ge going on those dates.

Still looking in Edinburgh.

If I were you I would book a self-catering apartment.
For GBP300 (total for 5 nights in September) you can stay in a Studio apartment by the Royal Mile with lift (very unusual in Edinburgh as most buildings don't have one), small kitchen and new bathroom. Here is a link:

Or you can stay in a lovely flat in the West End (one of the most privileged areas in town, on the same street as the French consulate) with a lovely living room and small garden area for GBP350 (total for 5 nights). Here is a link:

Can't imagine there's a problem with booking hotels in September - it's the nearest Edinburgh has to a down time as it recovers and sobers up after the Festivals

Unless by early September you mean the first weekend of September which is when you have the big fireworks concert to signal the end of said Festivals

Yeah I was surprised at that too as the three I mentioned in Glasgow were all showing lots of availability in early September. Not having the precise dates though I cant be certain.

Interesting choice with the Grasshopper Bob. It's a pretty recent addition to our hotel scene and looks well reviewed. Only thing I would say is it's on Union St, which is a little tatty these days, one of the major streets where people pick up buses, but it is very central and you can be anywhere in the city centre within a 15 minute walk from it. I'll be intrigued to see your trip report. Happy travels!

Our 5 nights in Edinburgh are actually 3+2--not 5 in a row.
Still looking and am leaning to two Apex properties.

Both the Carlton and Radisson were booked for my dates---10, 11---in Glasgow. I checked several sources.
