Advice on long weekend in FL in early Feb

We like to get a little sun (and warmth) in late Jan or early Feb. We live in the Wash DC area. We went to Puerto Rico for about 3 years because it's a direct flight and doesn't take up too much of our precious time just getting there and back.

We thought about Florida this year - my first thought was Key West, but we'd have to make a stop somewhere and it REALLY lengthens the travel time.

So any other suggestions for elsewhere in Florida I can get to directly? I want warm-hot weather. Either east or west is fine. We're really only familiar with the Fort Lauderdale area, and the Tampa area, but neither is a safe bet in Feb (right?).

Thanks as always,
Alice

Everywhere in Florida can be 'iffy' in February. We were in Miami two years ago and suffered through cold weather that prohibited anything less warming than a walk on the beach.

Nothing wrog with Key West because the trip is part of the pleasure. It is gorgeous and absolutely unique. If you hate the idea of driving both ways, fly in and rent a car to drive back.

After experiencing just a bit on a day cruise a few years ago, I've dreamed of going back to stay on Virgin Gorda via St. Thomas.

Actually, Puerto Rico is looking better, the more I look into this. There are direct flights, shorter and cheaper than going to the Virgin Islands. We've stayed east west and south in PR, never IN San Juan, maybe we'll give that a try. Might be able to snag a reasonable package deal (which I've never tried, don't know if they're any good).

I think if we had more time, I'd be inclined to go to the islands - another possibility is to talk my husband into another day or two!

Is Mexico safe enough at this point? We've been to both Cozumel and Cancun, but not for a while.

So what's the weather generally like in Key West in Feb? Iffy or probably great?
