Yes yes yes sanctuary lodge is worth it.

Just a quick note. We are sitting on our patio looking at Huayna picchu drinking Pisco sours and thinking "life is good". Definitely, if it is in your budget, go for it. Skip the Hiram Bingham train, take the cheaper backpacker train and splurge on the hotel. The food is excellent (not the buffet the day tripper group travelers get) and you could not better service. I am typing by candlelight from the candle just delivered to our room to keep the mosquitoes away on our patio. I can just WOW.

Stayed at the Sanctuary Lodge for 2 nights while visiting Machu Picchu.Located right in the park, just steps from Machu Picchu. The hotel is quaint and posh with great service.
The room was small, yet well appointed. No bath, just a shower. Also no in-room heat/air conditioning (although the weather was perfect and neither was needed).
Lunch was wonderful, as was dinner. A Peruvian band performed in the evening. The problem was that I and several other guests got food poisoning, either at lunch or at dinner. This made for a very bad night and a most difficult second day in the park. Luckily I had a private guided tour the day before and saw a vast majority of the wonderful ruins.
Some of the affected guests received a partial refund and my travel agent has contacted the hotel on my behalf as well.
After checkout, you are still welcome to use the hospitality suite to shower and rest before catching the bus to the train station. A nice touch.I would still recommend this hotel for its location and surroundings. Just be careful with the food.

Many years ago there was a tourist hotel roughly where the Sanctuary is now. The rooms were not that clean (we asked that they just take away the shower curtain) and the food was inedible. We paid US$100, a huge amount in those days. It was still worth it. There is just something about staying behind when everyone else has left and seeing MP at dawn that is priceless. The pisco sour helps too!

Looking forward to the whole report...I guess you are doing okay with the altitude if you have a Pisco Sour in hand!
