I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of what the tolls would be driving from, actually CDG to Bergerac, near Bordeaux.

Just a ball park figure would help us in our (over)planning!

We'll have a Diesel shirt car if we decide to drive, but I'm trying to compare costs of driving versus trains, and I am already greatly confused by all the variants!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Why would you make this long boring drive when you could take the TGV for a handful of euros and be there in half the time?

Was about to ask what this new type of "shirt" car was...and had it been produced by the Diesel label!!!

I'm with StCirq, TGV travel would be a quicker, more relaxing and probably less expensive (considering car hire, fuel, tolls - which btw would be around Euro25-30) way to reach your destination.

Hi taconictraveler - if you go to www.viamichelin.com you can simply put in your planned route and it will give you the route, distance and the tolls along the way.

I found this to be a valuable tool when planning my France trip.

stormbird: I was not that familiar with via Michelin maps, they are awesome, and I got lots of info. Many, many thanks.

I think TGV would be better and faster and cheaper, if we get the tickets soon. Problem is, we love our friends and want to be with them, but they are not ready to make up their minds (they are busy, and still employed, and have a new granddaughter, so are pre-occupied) and I'm afraid we are losing the good train ticket prices, while they take time to decide TRAIN or CAR.

Maybe we have to bite the bullet and meet them in Bergerac.

Where by the way, I think there are fewer car rental choices.

In this case, if your friends are dallying in their decision, I'd just tell them the pros and cons of the travel choices and tell them you're booking the train tickets in 2 days and can book theirs too if they like, but any later and you'll miss the good prices. If they still can't make up their minds (oh dear, doesn't bode well for the trip!), then go ahead with your plans and you can easily meet in Bergerac. As for car rental options there, if there are none/limited, you could always get off the TGV in Bordeaux (where you would change trains anyway) and drive from there to Bergerac with a rental car.

For four, a car rental might not be much more expensive than the train, depending on how large the car. We just drove a Peugeot 308 diesel from Hautefort to Paris with a total cost of 46€ for the fuel. BTW, many truckers choose to go via A20 (no tolls) from Vierzon to Brive-la-Gaillarde and then A89 to Bordeaux to save on the tolls. ViaMichelin can give you the comparison in time travel and cost for the various routes you might choose.

I really dislike the toll roads in France, you don't see anything of the countryside. I'd train to where I wanted to go and rent a car there

We are taking the train from Paris to Bordeaux and renting a car from Bordeaux. We wanted to take the train to a smaller town and rent a car but they are not open on Sundays.

I'd be somewhat reluctant to get off the plane in the morning (assuming that you are on an overnight flight from New York), drive around/across half of Paris - probably already in the morning rush hour - and then 6 more hours to the South of France.
Jimpink's plan sounds much more relaxed.. take the TGV to Bordeaux, and use the rental car for the last few kms and to be independent to explore the region later on.

www.viamichelin.fr gives the precise toll figure for Paris-Bergerac as 26.20€.

I usually use www.mappy.fr, and it gives it as 25.60. It seems to also tell you were speed cameras are, at least roughly.

Viamichelin also has the speed camera information, but why would any responsible driver need it?
