Getting Here and Around

Most of the city can be explored on foot, as most tourist amenities, hotels, restaurants, and the bulk of the churches and colonial buildings are within a few blocks of the Plaza de Armas. Getting to out-of-the-way workshops in Santa Ana and La Libertad requires a quick cab ride. Basic city tours (S/25) offered at every agency depart daily and will save you a good deal of hassle.

Ayacucho's Alfredo Mendívil Duarte Airport (AYP) is 4 km (2½ miles) from the city. Fom the Plaza de Armas, you can take a taxi (about S/6) or catch a bus or colectivo, which will deliver you about a half block from the airport. Also, Ayacucho has no central bus station, so for tickets, you have to go to each operator's office individually.
