When to Go

In each season Patagonia has its own magic. November to March—summer in the Southern Hemisphere—is considered high season in Patagonia, when there is generally more sunshine and clearer skies. Demand for accommodations is highest in January and February, so advance reservations are vital. The weather in Patagonia can change in an instant no matter the season, so always bring layers. Summer weather in these latitudes swings between warm and pleasantly cool, although strong winds are common, and on or near Antarctic waters, these breezes can be quite biting.

In spring (September to November) and fall (March to May) the weather is usually delightfully mild, but can also be downright cold, depending on clouds and the wind. These seasons do, however, bring wonderful colors to the landscape, and the population shrinks by more than half. The winter months of June, July, and August are blissfully free of tourists, although many attractions and hotels go into hibernation.
