Fodor's Expert Review Hostería Tyndall

6170000, Chile

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This wooden lodge, often surrounded by flocks of snow geese and other wild birds, has simple rooms with attractive wood paneling. The hallways have dramatic, colonial-era light fittings, which can be seen as either broodingly romantic or just not doing their job; the lodge itself can be noisy—a problem solved by renting a log cottage (good value for groups of four). There's also a more basic refugio with dorm-style rooms that are cheap. Owner Christian Bore is a wildlife enthusiast and bird-watcher; ask him for a tour of the grassy plain looking out toward the central cluster of snowy peaks. Or go fishing—the kitchen staff will cook your catch for free.

PROS

  • cheaper lodging and dining options than other places in the park
  • great views of Los Cuernos (the Horns) on a clear day

CONS

  • hallways are poorly lit
  • the lodge itself can get noisy
  • frayed around the edges
