Getting Here and Around

In the center of the Isla Grande de Chiloé, Castro is only about a one-hour drive from Ancud along Ruta 5, the Pan-American Highway. For a more interesting journey, consider the mostly unpaved coastal road to Castro via Quemchi, which takes twice as long but passes numerous historic churches and other tourist sites.

In late 2012, Castro opened Mocupulli Airport, which four days a week receives commercial flights from the mainland. There is also regular and frequent bus service from the terminal in Puerto Montt to Castro, which takes almost four hours. Buses Queilén and Gallardo operate on Chiloé Island only. Various buses go to Dalcahue from the Castro bus terminal. Buses JAC and ETM can take you to the main cities of Chiloé and several cities in Chile. Cruz del Sur have routes nationwide and even into Argentina. Reserve ahead for buses.
