Although the 1793 Igreja de São Francisco de Assis has soapstone pulpits and altars by Aleijadinho, its most impressive works are the sacristy's ceiling panels, which were painted by Ataíde. They depict, in somber tones, the life and death of St. Francis of Assisi and are considered by many to be the artist's masterpiece. Sadly, they've been damaged by termites and water.
