Getting Oriented in Yellowstone National Park

  • Mammoth Hot Springs. This full-service area has an inn, restaurants, campsites, a visitor center, and general stores.
  • Norris. This is the hottest and most changeable part of Yellowstone National Park.
  • Madison. Here the Madison River is formed by the joining of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers. Anglers will find healthy stocks of brown and rainbow trout and mountain whitefish.
  • Old Faithful. Old Faithful erupts every 90 minutes or so. The geyser site is a full-service area with inns, restaurants, and general stores.
  • Grant Village and West Thumb. Named for President Ulysses S. Grant, Grant Village is on the western edge of Yellowstone Lake.
  • Yellowstone Lake. This is the largest body of water within the park. This is a full-service area.
  • Canyon. The Yellowstone River runs through the canyon, exposing geothermally altered rock.
  • Tower-Roosevelt. The least-visited area of the park is the place to go for horseback riding and animal sightings.
