If you've grown tired of the ubiquitous floral wallpaper of so many traditional New England inns, Jane and Dave Garbose's charming Mt. Philo Inn is a good place to check out. Located virtually on the slopes of Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte, the 1896 inn offers both gorgeous views of Lake Champlain from its outdoor porches and the ideal blend of historical and contemporary boutique decor inside. In terms of space, you can't do better, as the smallest of the suites clocks in at 1,300 square feet. All have full kitchens. The innkeeper's taste in art is another highlight, featuring works by Vermont artists Homer Wells and Tad Spurgeon, among others.
