Fodor's Review

If you've grown tired of the floral wallpaper of so many traditional New England inns, Jane and Dave Garbose's Mt. Philo Inn may be for you. Practically on the slopes of Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte, the 1896 inn offers gorgeous views of Lake Champlain from its outdoor porches and the ideal blend of historical and contemporary boutique decor inside. In terms of space, you can't do better: the smallest of the suites measures 1,300 square feet. All have full kitchens and either two or three bedrooms, so they're ideal for families or small groups. The innkeeper's taste in art is another highlight, and works by Vermont artists Homer Wells and Tad Spurgeon, among others, adorn the walls.
