Both U.S. 40 and U.S. 191 are well maintained but have some curvy, mountainous stretches, and away from major towns, be prepared for dirt roads. Keep your vehicle fueled up because gas stations can be far apart, and some are closed on Sunday. Watch for wildlife on the road, especially at night. Price is the largest city on U.S. 6, the major route between the Wasatch Front and the southeastern part of the state. Dinosaur National Monument (which spans the Utah–Colorado border) is about 3½ hours east of Salt Lake City on U.S. 40, or 2½ hours northeast of Price via U.S. 191 and U.S. 40. Flaming Gorge is 40 miles north of Vernal via U.S. 191. The Uinta Mountains and the High Uintas Wilderness Area are about 1½ hours east of Salt Lake City, first via I–80, U.S. 40, and Highway 248 to Kamas and then via Highway 150.
