Although it extends only 30 miles, you can easily spend a full day on this aptly named route admiring the views, visiting historic sites, taking short hikes, and getting a Big Bend education. There are scenic overlooks, a backside perspective of the Chisos Mountains, plenty of exhibits, and the ruins of old homesteads. If you don't mind a little grate in your gait from the gravel that blankets the road, you can make this drive a loop by reconnecting with Highway 118 from
Santa Elena Canyon via unpaved Old Maverick Road for 12.8 miles. If you're in an RV, don't even attempt Old Maverick Road. The road isn't paved and is rough going in some spots.
