Hilton Head and the Low Country Restaurants

Old Fort Pub

Old Fort Pub Review

Overlooking the sweeping marshlands of Skull Creek, this romantic restaurant has almost panoramic views. It offers one of the island's best overall dining experiences: the building is old enough to have some personality, and the professional waiters do their duty. More important, the kitchen serves flavorful food, including a great appetizer of roasted calamari with sun-dried tomatoes and olives. Entrées like the bouillabaisse and filet mignon with chanterelles hit the spot. The wine list is extensive, and there's outdoor seating plus a third-floor porch for toasting the sunset. Sunday brunch is celebratory and includes a mimosa.

We went to OFP this weekend, a return trip from two years ago. Loved it then, hate it now. I ordered salmon (done medium) and luckily took a whiff before eating it. STRONG fishy smell. My table partners agreed, and I sent it back. The waiter returned saying the fish "might be a little off" and offered to bring another. I asked if they would make a substitute and he said he would check. He came back and offered the trout but after the smelly salmon, I didn't want fish and that is all they offered. The did comp my meal, a small salad and dessert. My table friends all three ordered the crab cakes and everyone was disappointed in the taste and amount of breading, comparing it to fast food crab cakes. The wait staff could use some training in how to handle situations like this. They could have sent us home with a desire to return, or an oath never to return. The latter is what the service and food produced. Too bad. Nice atmosphere/scenery.
