Choose your ambience at this mainstay on the Newport waterfront: formal or laid-back. The posh dining in the forest-green Commodore Room (jacket required and reservations essential) is where fried Brie, escargots bourguignon, rack of lamb, and roast duck with a raspberry-Burgundy sauce are among the classic offerings. Enjoy a casual lunch or dinner in The Tavern (no reservtions accepted) with its high-gloss black walls adorned with old nautical maps. There's also a relaxed outdoor patio and bar for the raw bar and famous clam chowder. You can buy chowder to go by the quart or half gallon, too.

    Tavern too pricey

    The other room was booked, so we tried the Tavern. It was packed, rather loud. The bill for two, with a bottle of wine, was over $100. However, the food was just average. I had sole and the portion was very small. So, we suggest you try another restaurant if you're planning to shell out 100 bucks.
