Fodor's Review

The custom-designed rooms at this landmark boutique hotel on the Cliff Walk represent the most unique and luxurious accommodations in Newport. Rooms have individual themes—Renaissance, Louis XVI, English Tudor, and a Gothic version evoking Harry Potter—and museum-quality antiques and rugs. Soak in a whirpool tub while watching TV. All rooms have heated bathroom floors, multiple showerheads, and wet bars. Even the men's and women's public restrooms off the lobby are worth spending time in (the men's room has individual flat-screen TVs). Many rooms have an outdoor balcony or deck. Breakfast is included.

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT

We recently splurged and spent a great deal of money to stay at this property. While the hotel was beautiful and staff were semi-helpful (which is why we gave it at least 2 stars), our weekend was a huge disappointment. During our stay, the property had also booked a wedding for Saturday - the last beautiful day we will probably see this fall. While we understood the venue could be used for such private engagements, we feel the property could have

handled things better. From 8:30 in the morning until around 5pm in the afternoon we were consistently inconvenienced. The wedding overtook the lobby area, lawn area, as well as the restaurant area. It was a total circus. When we asked at the front desk their only response was 'We apologize for the inconvenience'. Am sure the wedding group paid a great deal to use the property, but so did we to enjoy a relaxing long weekend looking to take advantage of the amenities....which we were not allowed to do. We normally stay at the Ocean House in RI and will stick with that property in the future. Be sure you check with The Chanler before you book to ensure you do not waste your money so you are treated as a second class citizen when they are too busy with a bigger venue.
