Hiking

Stissing Mountain. The Stissing Mountain Fire Tower crowns the summit (elevation 1,403 feet) of Stissing Mountain. The clear-day views from the 90-foot-tall structure stretch from Albany to Bear Mountain and across the Catskills. You also may see eagles, hawks, and other birds in flight from the tower, which is reached via hiking trails accessed at the mountain base. The mountain is undeveloped, with no facilities. Parking is limited to a small dirt lot across the road from a trailhead. Trail maps are available from local businesses. 499 Lake Rd, Pine Plains, New York, 12567. 518/398–5247; 518/398–5673; stissingfiretower.org.
