Fodor's Review

The only elevators in town whisk you to upper stories and spectacular views of the ocean. Ask for a room with a direct view and an extra-large whirlpool tub, or, as a second choice, a side-view room with a jet tub. Vast outdoor porches and a large freshwater pool make this hotel feel like a mansion. Both restaurants have fabulous water views.

The Breakers on the Ocean Review

Hi, my mother-in-law and her college roommate have a "reunion" every year in either NJ or MD (their home states). This year they were scheduled to meet at The Breakers in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Unfortunately, my mother-in-law's roommate was hospitalized from a debilitating kidney disease AND her train was cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. When they called to ask if they could get a rain check or refund (because they left a one-night deposit), they

were old that they could not. Then, when my mother-in-law called they accused her of fabricating the story because "it kept changing" even though she was both hospitalized AND had her train cancelled. I called to try and smooth things over and I was met by a very rude Asst. Mgr. named Mary Ellen. When I asked to not hang up on me she said "I'm not hanging up on you. I'm telling you I'm hanging up on you and then I'm going to hang up on you." Flabbergasted, I analogized that using some expletives, which I regret, but in now way were they directed toward to Mary Ellen. In response, she basically told me to go "F" myself. I have never been treated in such a disrespectful way. Please be advised.

Maybe we should have slept on the veranda

You see, the beautiful view from the veranda is the only positive aspect of this hotel. Service is nearly nonexistent, which is likely by design. Employees are surly and defensive. Most likely because they encounter complaints all day long. The state of the guestrooms is deplorable. We elected to pay top dollar for an oceanview room. There was no ocean view and the furniture was falling apart. Pink carpet, drop tile ceilings, and bedspread from 1968

were highlights of the decor. Suffice to say that we will not return to this hotel. They have a gorgeous location but their product is just dreadful!

A Thoroughly Disappointing Experience

For $275/nite, we expected a lot more than we got. Upon arrival, we were left waiting while someone argued on the phone. The small fridge in the room was left open to defrost when we arrived. We emptied the water that had accumulated & called the desk. They said they'd be right up. When we returned, hours later, noone had been there & we had to finish the job ourselves. The "hot tub" was terrible, with 3 of 4 jets working, but placed so that you couldn't

position yourself to enjoy them. There was no list of amenities given (you found them on your own or not). The beach is NOT private, they just give you a badge for the public beach. Plus, the hotel was in moderate disrepair (walls needed spackle & paint, a fixture dangled from the ceiling in the bath). There is no way I'd ever return to this hotel.
