Many visitors to Sin City looking for a bit of ring-a-ding-ding leave disappointed, finding the frequently swinging wrecking ball has left behind little but massive movie-set-like resort-casinos to dominate the landscape. But benign neglect has preserved this shagadelic lounge, one of the town's truly essential nightspots. Near the old Stardust Hotel, this evergreen ironic-romantic getaway serves food, but what you're really here for is the must-see-to-believe firepit, the crazy waitress outfits, and the lethally alcoholic Scorpion cocktail. The Pep showed up in the Martin Scorsese film Casino.

Behind the door inside the Peppermill restaurant is a surprising dark oasis in shades of the 70s. After a long night of casinos and shows, we plopped down on a cozy curved couch and were joined by a buxom waitress in a long black dress. The signature drink, Scorpion Bowl, wasn't on the menu-- she didn't know why-but it's available frozen with ice cream or on the rocks. We decided to share one and ordered an appetizer of chicken fingers to soak up some of the booze. Then we leaned back and enjoyed the strange serenity of this place, feeling like we were in on somebody's secret.
