It's devilishly tricky to locate, especially if you're driving, but once you do, you'll discover the JJH is a real find. This turn-of-the-20th-century building, across from Massachusetts General Hospital, was once a housing facility for nurses. Now, it's a sedate four-story inn, and one of the best values in town. The Federal-style double parlor has a cluster of floral-pattern chairs and sofas where you can relax with afternoon tea or coffee. Guest rooms are furnished with handsome upholstered pieces, and nearly all have kitchenettes. Triple-glazed windows block much noise from busy Charles Circle; many rooms have views of the Charles River. The inn is adjacent to Charles Street, home to lovely cafés, specialty boutiques, and antiques shops. Guests are a well-mannered mix of business travelers, Europeans, and hospital visitors. Pros: close to Beacon Hill, free Wi-Fi, good value. Cons: located near a hospital so you might hear ambulance sirens.

The Charles Street T stop is right out front making it exceptionally useful for those who don't want to deal with a car in Boston (and no one should). Rarely a problem with noise, charming location.
