Thanks to new development projects and new residents in the last decade or so, Frederick's downtown has become positively vibrant. Galleries open their doors on First Saturdays, and restaurants often run specials. The group Celebrate Frederick hosts a Sunday night concert series from June through August at the Baker Park bandshell, a few blocks from the main drag. A 1920s movie marquee heralds the entrance to this downtown cultural hub for plays, musical performances, and more. Past performers have included singer Emmy Lou Harris, South African a cappella singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Second City comedy troupe, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO).
