Fodor's Expert Review Pleasant Bay Bed & Breakfast

386 West Side Rd., Maine, USA Fodor's Choice

A graciously welcoming, Cape Cod–style inn with three spacious guest rooms and a lovely suite, this appropriately named inn takes advantage of its location on a hilly farm aside a tidal river that widens into a bay offering visitors hiking paths and a tranquil place at the water's edge—and a chance to interact with llamas, goats, and other farm animals. A large deck overlooks the river, perfect for a morning coffee, and there’s a comfortable living room for guests that’s well-stocked with books. A full breakfast is served in the innkeeper’s large dining room. The suite has a private deck, sitting area with a pullout couch, and kitchenette. Rooms have water views and are decorated with antiques. Along with most rooms easily accommodating an extra person or two, a foldaway or crib is also available. A second-level barn apartment is available for weekly or longer stays.

PROS

  • nice for families, two guest rooms and suite have a pullout couch or extra bed
  • price and value can't be beat---this may be the best inn for the buck in America
  • innkeeper goes all out to adjust breakfast for special dietary needs

CONS

  • bit of a drive to restaurants and amenities
  • two rooms share a bath
  • off the beaten path (for some)
