Fodor's Expert Review Highbrook Motel

94 Eden St., Bar Harbor, Maine, 04609, USA

Run by the third generation of the family that’s owned it since 1978, original mid-century features like porcelain tile and tubs and wood-framed screen doors to usher ocean breezes into guestrooms, don't show their age; the 24-hour access lobby shows the same meticulous attention to maintenance and cleanliness—even with free microwave popcorn available (and movie-style containers to put it in). Painted light blue, with one king bed, rooms are in two one-story buildings and have at-door parking; most furnishings are newer, but some rooms have original bureaus and headboards that add to the relaxing yesteryear vibe. The multiuse path across the street leads to Bar Harbor's waterfront.

PROS

  • rooms have an inside seating area (most have an outside one, too)
  • one building has larger rooms and baths (adjoining dressing area)
  • Adirondack chairs at the Island Explorer bus stop on the street out front

CONS

  • microwave in the lobby but not rooms
  • only one bed (king) per room
  • two-person room limit (no cots or cribs)
