Luahiwa Petroglyphs

Luahiwa Petroglyphs Review

On a steep slope overlooking the Palawai Basin are 34 boulders with engravings. Drawn in a mixture of styles between the late 1700s and early 1800s, the simple stick figures depict animals, people, and mythical beings. A no longer visible heiau, or temple, was used to summon the rain and was dedicated to the god Kane. Do not draw on or deface the images, and do not add to the collection. From Lanai City, head south on Highway 440, turn left on the first dirt road, and follow it for 1.2 miles. Do not go left uphill, but continue straight. When you see boulders on a hillside, park and walk up to the petroglyphs. Watch your step, wear sturdy shoes, and carry water.
