Luahiwa Petroglyphs

Luahiwa Petroglyphs Review

On a steep slope overlooking the Palawai Basin are 34 boulders with carvings. Drawn in a mixture of styles dating to the late 1700s and early 1800s, the simple stick figures depict animals, people, and mythical beings. A nearby heiau, or temple, no longer visible, was used to summon the rains and was dedicated to the god Kane. Do not draw on or deface the carvings, and do not add to the collection. From Lanai City turn south on Highway 440 (Manele Road) and continue to the first dirt road on your left. Follow the dirt road along fields 1.2 mi; do not go left uphill but continue straight, and when you see boulders on hillside, park and walk up to petroglyphs.
