Dunedin Golf Club. Dunedin is Tampa Bay's little Scotland, the birthplace of golf, so it's only natural that one of the area's better courses is here. Designed by influential golf-course architect Donald Ross, this semiprivate, recently restored facility also has a driving range, a pro shop, and a clubhouse. The course itself offers numerous challenging holes with names like Isn't Easy, Calamity Jane, and Devil's Kick, with the twists and turns to match. Water hazards aren't too overwhelming here, except on the 14th hole, known as Round the Lake. 1050 Palm Blvd., Dunedin, Florida, 34698. 727/733–2134; www.dunedingolfclub.com. $58.

Innisbrook. Considered one of the top 100 golf destinations in Florida, this resort is home to Larry Packard–designed Copperhead Course, which hosts the annual PGA Tour Valspar Championship. Open to resort guests as well as the public, the four courses here take full advantage of the fact that they're on the coast, with plenty of ponds and sand traps adding to the scenery as well as the challenge. Fairways here on the Copperhead Course consist of rolling hills lined with trees, which are prime for spotting blue herons, squirrels, and even an alligator or two. The Island Course offers narrow fairways, some of which are lined by Lake Innisbrook, others by tall stands of pine and cypress trees. The North Course features tight fairways, numerous bunkers, and 11 water hazards, while the South Course has more of a links course–like layout. The Fox Squirrel Course is a quick 9-hole course available to guests only. 36750 U.S. Hwy. 19 N, Palm Harbor, Florida, 34684. 888/794–8627; 727/942–2000; innisbrookgolfresort.com. Copperhead Course, $280; Island Course, $240; North and South Courses, $190.
