Solomon's Castle

Fodor's Review:

Solomon's Castleshows off Florida's wackier side. Namesake Howard Solomon got an itch in 1972 to build a castle. The 12,000-square-foot work in progress is constructed of thousands of offset aluminum printing plates. Inside, you'll find tons of odd sculptures, including a knight assembled from Volkswagen parts and an elephant made of oil drums. There's also a restaurant (open Friday and Saturday nights in season) that's a full-scale model of a Spanish galleon. The castle is 40 minutes east of Sarasota.

  • Cost: $10
  • Open: Oct.-June, Tues.-Sun. 11-4
