Hearing locals speak of Tidbits's best-selling side dish is a little like listening to Homer Simpson talk about doughnuts ("Mmm, potato salad")—dreamy and lustful. Although not every item on the menu has such a hypnotic hold on its customers, the lunch-only, family-owned restaurant has a devoted customer base, mostly San Marco and downtown worker bees, who generate buzz about chicken-supreme pitas, a New Orleans roast beef po' boy, and the "Tidbit Special" (seasoned chicken chunks and pasta on a bed of lettuce topped with avocado and cheddar). Desserts, including a family-recipe favorites Mama's Peach Bread Pudding and Lemon Cake, are cooked on-site. It's open fewer than 20 hours a week and there's often a line 10 deep.
