Bus Tours

Aramark Tours. If you want a well-rounded visit to Mesa Verde's most popular sites, consider a group tour. The park concessionaire provides all-day and half-day guided tours of the Chapin Mesa and Far View sites, departing in buses from either Morefield Campground or Far View Lodge. Tours are led by Aramark guides or park rangers, who share information about the park's history, geology, and excavation processes. Cold water is provided, but you'll need to bring your own snacks. Buy tickets at Far View Lodge, the Morefield Campground, or online. Tours sell out, so reserve in advance. Far View Lodge, 1 Navajo Hill, mile marker 15, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, 81330. 970/529–4422; 800/449–2288; www.visitmesaverde.com. From $41. Mid-Apr.–mid-Oct., daily, departs at 8 am and 1:30 pm. 700 Years Tour closed late Oct.--mid-Apr. Far View Explorer Tour closed mid-Aug.--late May.

Guided Tours

Ranger-Led Tours. The cliff dwellings known as Balcony House, Cliff Palace, and Long House can be explored only on ranger-led tours; the first two last about an hour, the third is 90 minutes. Buy tickets at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center. These are active tours and may not be suitable for some children; each requires climbing ladders without handrails and squeezing through tight spaces. Be sure to bring water and sunscreen. Site schedules vary so check ahead. Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. 970/529–4465; www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/tour_tickets.htm. $5 per site. Closed: Cliff Palace: Oct./Nov.--late May. Balcony House: early Oct.--late Apr. Long House: mid-Oct.--mid-May.
