Fodor's Review

Just west of the Alamosa wildlife refuge is its sister sanctuary, the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, a 15,000-acre park that's a stopping point for up to 20,000 migrating cranes in the spring and fall. It hosts an annual Crane Festival, held one weekend in mid-March in the nearby town of Monte Vista and a children's Crane Festival in mid-October at the park with kid-friendly activities. You can see the sanctuary via a 2½-mile driving tour.
