Why We Like It

Historic charm, a wine hour, and of-the-moment technological amenities in the heart of Union Square make this a fine choice for travelers on a budget.

Fodor's Expert Review

A friendly staff, along with reasonably sized rooms, provide a retreat from the hustle of Union Square while being located in the heart of it all. The small inn dates back to 1912 when it was an antiquarian bookstore with accommodations.

You Should Know Those who aren't keen on hearing the frequent late night revelers who populate the region should bring ear plugs.

Bathroom

Carrara marble lines the refreshed bathrooms. Large walk-in showers, Lather bath products, and floating glass shelves allow for the bathrooms to feel more expansive. The hotel only offers a tub in their Spreckels Suite.

Lobby

In the cheery lobby area, the friendly staff offers plenty of advice about local destinations. Each floor offers a parlor with games, snacks, and wine.

Dining

In the mornings, guests congregate on their floor's parlor lounge for an expanded Continental breakfast; in the afternoon the staff offers wine and small bites; and before bed, guests munch on chocolate chip cookies and chat about their day. At turndown, staffers deliver bottles of water and chocolate.

Drinking

The nightly wine hour is a popular event for guests, who gather to swap stories about their days.
