Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe Restaurants

Gourmet House of Hong Kong

Updated 03/28/2014

Fodor's Review

Traditional Chinatown specialties like chow fun (thick rice noodles) are excellent at this simple, diner-style place: try the assorted-meat version, with chicken, shrimp, pork, and squid. Dishes with black-bean sauce are among the menu's best. Delights such as five-flavor frogs' legs, duck feet with greens, and beef tripe casserole are offered, if you're feeling adventurous.

Very Good Chinese in Central Phoenix

This old fashioned Chinese has an overwhelming number of choices of very good. well prepared food. Setting is simple, almost diner like, but food cannot be beat.

You wouldn't complain about the atmosphere if. . .

this restaurant were located in an intercity Chinatown, which is where it should be. Unfortunately, Phoenix doesn't have a Chinatown, so ethnic restaurants get picked on because they lack atmosphere and look like cafeteria's. Who cares -- it's the food that counts here, and it's resoundingly very good, authentic and cheap, cheap, cheap.

Terrible atmosphere, but good buy.

It's the closest authentic Cantonese resteraunt to downtown. The beef flat noodle is some of the best I've tried, but the wonton noodle soup is very disappointing. Try the steamed fish if you haven't before.

Tired and Basically Unclean

The interior of this place (the front of the "House") is tired, shabby and worn out. If this is their best foot forward, I shudder to think about what major health code violations are happening in the kitchen area. The food is passable, and the prices are pre-inflation. I just can't get past the ratty carpet and cheezy decor. If you are short on $$$ and don't have a choice, go for it. Otherwise, look for something a little more sanitary.
