When Wood Turns to Stone: The Story of the Arizona National Petrified Forest, by K.S. Tankersley, explains the science behind petrified wood, as well as the park's origin.

While not a story about the national park itself, The Petrified Forest, a 1936 film starring Bette Davis, Leslie Howard, and Humphrey Bogart tells the story of a drifter, a waitress, and a gangster who cross paths in the Petrified Forest area.
