Hannagan Meadow

Want to get away from it all? The Apache Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests has secluded spaces for outdoor adventures year-round. Hikers and anglers can check out the 11,000-acre Bear Wallow Wilderness Area (west of U.S. 191 and bordered by Forest Service roads 25 and 54), which has cool, flowing streams stocked with native Apache trout. The Rose Spring Trail is a pleasant 5½-mile hike with a moderate gradient and magnificent views from the Mogollon Rim’s edge; the trailhead is at the end of Forest Service Road 54. Reno Trail and Gobbler Trail both drop into the main canyon from well-marked trailheads off Forest Service Road 25. Reno Trail meanders 2 miles through conifer forest and aspen, while Gobbler Trail is 2½ miles long, with views overlooking the Black River and Fort Apache Indian Reservation. This designated wilderness (and some of its trails) borders the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, where an advance permit is required for entry.
