Fodor's Expert Review Homeport Historic Bed & Breakfast Inn
80 Douglas Ave., Saint John, New Brunswick, E2K 1E4, Canada Fodor's Choice
Graceful arches, fine antiques, Italian marble fireplaces, Oriental carpets, and a maritime theme distinguish this pair of mansions overlooking the harbor. Built in 1858 by twin brothers of a prominent Saint John shipbuilding family, the two buildings are now linked by a grand central reception hall that's completely in keeping with the original design. Climb the stairs to the widow's walk on the top floor for the best view. Each oversize room is elegant, unique, and equipped with modern amenities, and the homemade breakfasts are hearty.
PROS
- hospitable, well-versed owners
- great sense of history
- close to the Reversing Falls Rapids
CONS
- the amazing view is sometimes obscured by fog
- not a pretty walk to downtown
- quite a lot of stairs up to the rooms
