Getting Here and Around

Air Travel

Aeropuerto Puerto Escondido (PXM) is a 10-minute taxi ride from town; most flights from the States connect in Mexico City. You can fly direct from Oaxaca City, but it's usually pretty pricey. Another option is to fly into Huatulco (HUX) and take a taxi or Sur bus the 1¾-hour drive to Puerto Escondido.

Bus Travel

Direct bus service from Oaxaca City is available via ADO, leaving from Oaxaca's first-class bus terminal (10 hours), or you can take one of the shuttle van services such as Villa Escondida (951/ 226–7419) that depart hourly and travel the faster (6½ hours) but stomach-churning route through the mountains.

Car Travel

If you drive from Oaxaca City, there are two routes at this writing. The most direct is Carretera 131, which turns off Carretera 175 south of Oaxaca City and goes straight to Puerto Escondido (6½–7 hours). However, it's a winding, narrow, two-lane road. Alternatively, you can take slightly less hair-raising Carretera 190 to Salina Cruz, where you pick up Carretera 200 to Puerto Escondido (8–9 hours). Don't drive either route at night. A new highway is under construction, but it is not yet finished.

Renting a car in Puerto Escondido isn't necessary unless you want to explore beaches outside of town. Rentals can be arranged at the airport.

Taxi Travel

Taxis in Puerto Escondido start at MX$25 for a ride from one neighborhood to another (say, from the Adoquín to the Rinconada).
