Getting Here and Around

The Pan-American Highway takes you straight into San Isidro de El General. It's 129 km (80 miles) south of San José and about 1½ hours' drive south of the San Gerardo de Dota highway exit. Truck traffic can be heavy and painfully slow. For folks in a hurry, there's a daily 35-minute SANSA flight from San José to the San Isidro airstrip, leaving San José at 7:55 am and returning at 8:40 am. Buses to Dominical leave from the San Isidro de El General bus terminal, southeast of the cathedral, near the Pan-American Highway. Buses bound for San Gerardo de Rivas, the starting point of the trail into Chirripó National Park, depart from San Isidro de El General at 5:30 am from the central park and at 2 pm from a stop at the central market.
