Fodor's Expert Review Uvita Market

Ballena National Marine Park Market/Bazaar

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

From 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, the place to be is this combination farmers' market and weekly gathering place for locals. About 20 vendors show up to sell organic produce, chocolate, homemade cheeses and hot sauces, fresh fish, baked goods, jams, and frozen gourmet dinners and soups to take home. You can also feast on ready-to-eat breakfast burritos, tamales, cakes, cookies, and the freshest, best doughnuts in the country, made right on the spot. Artists sell painted masks, colorful textiles, and beautiful wildlife photographs. Every third Saturday there's a garage-sale table, too. This is a great place to meet English-speaking locals as they meet and greet. Some weeks, there's live music by local bands. You'll find the market just off the Costanera Highway, across from the Banco de Costa Rica and down a short side road. Just look for all the parked cars.
