This very rustic lodge has the best location on the Pacific side of the Osa Peninsula, with South Seas island–style thatch-roof cabins perched on the spine of a ridge overlooking the ocean, but the amenities are on the primitive side, so it's not for everyone. Although the Costa Rican owners have made lots of upgrades, it's still very much a back-to-nature experience and a return to simpler, more affordable times in Costa Rica. Private porches are perfect for siestas, sunsets, and stargazing. The screened cabins have comfortable beds with wooden headboards painted with wildlife and tree branches for posts. Four larger cabins, set back in the garden, don't have ocean views or breezes. Toucans and scarlet macaws visit every morning, and paths lead from the lodge to two pristine beaches and deep into the Río Claro National Wildlife Refuge, as well as to the Coastal Walking Trail. A knowledgeable, enthusiastic resident guide is on hand for nature walks and boat trips to Corcovado National Park and to nearby Caño Island, all included in the affordable three-night package price. The lodge also arranges diving tours and dolphin-watching excursions. The rancho restaurant has a happy family feel, and you can choose a private table or share with other guests. Food is simple, typically Tico with some interesting Continental touches. There is electricity for only a few hours in the evening, and no hot water. But in this tropical climate, you may be happy for a tepid shower.
