Hiking

High in the hills above Escazú is the tiny community of San Antonio de Escazú, famous for its annual oxcart festival held the second Sunday of March. The view from here—of nearby San José and distant volcanoes—is impressive by both day and night. If you head higher than San Antonio de Escazú, brace yourself for seemingly vertical roads that wind up into the mountains toward Pico Blanco, the highest point in the Escazú Cordillera, which is a half-day hike to ascend. You can also hike San Miguel, one peak east. We recommend you go with an outfitter—far safer than hiking on your own.

Aventuras Picotours. The owner of Aventuras Picotours was the first Costa Rican to reach the summit of Everest; he can lead you on a variety of far less daunting daylong hikes in the hills above town. From Church of San Antonio de Escazú, 300 m east, 1,800 m south, and 50 m east, Escazú, San José, 10202. 8880–2676; www.picotours.com. Tours from $59.
