Getting Here and Around

The road from La Fortuna via Nuevo Arenal is in good shape, with just a few short potholed stretches. Give yourself sufficient time (say, two hours) for the trip, and make the drive during daylight hours. Public buses travel to and from La Fortuna twice daily, and from a small terminal at Calle 20 and Avenida 3 in San José five times daily. If you’re coming from Monteverde, keep in mind that the first 40 km (24 miles) are unpaved and slow going.
