Getting Here and Around

Both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly from Belize City to Placencia, usually with a quick stop in Dangriga, and also from Punta Gorda. The airstrip is about 2 miles (3 km) north of the center of Placencia Village. A so-called international airport, privately financed, was partially built but then left to revert to jungle. Its remains are about 2 miles (3 km) northwest of the Placencia Peninsula.

By road, from the Southern Highway at Mile 22.2, it's about 8.25 miles (14 km) to Riversdale, 15.25 miles (26 km) to Maya Beach, 19 miles (31 km) to Seine Bight, and 25 miles (41 km) to Placencia Village. The road is completely paved. Ritchie's Bus Line and BEBB have buses between Dangriga and Placencia several times a day. James Bus Lines, the dominant bus service in the south, has nine or 10 buses a day each way between Belize City and Punta Gorda, but these buses stop across the lagoon in Independence rather than on the Placencia Peninsula itself.

Since there's no point-to-point bus service on the peninsula, and taxis are expensive, a rental car can be handy. If you haven't rented one in Belize City, you can rent one locally. Currently there are several car-rental agencies on the peninsula, plus a branch of Belize City's Budget agency.
