Powfoot Golf Club. A pleasant mix of links and parkland holes, this course looks out across the Solway Firth. Its roughs and the tough thorny whins (local bushes with yellow flowers) make the course quite challenging, especially when the wind blows off the firth in summer, but it is the views from here that make it memorable and a pleasure to play. Powfoot is included in the Gateway to Golf Pass. The club is 14 miles west of Gretna Green via the A75. Off B724, Cummertrees, Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, DG12 5QE. 01461/204100; www.powfootgolfclub.com. Mid-Mar.--Sept., £40 weekdays, £46 weekends; Oct.--early Mar., £23.
