Golf

East of Perthshire, near the city of Dundee, lies a string of demanding courses along the shores of the North Sea and inland into the foothills of the Grampian Mountains. Golfers who excel in windy conditions particularly enjoy the breezes blowing westward from the sea.

Carnoustie Golf Links. The venue for the British Open in 1999, 2007, and 2018, the coastal links around Carnoustie have challenged golfers since at least 1527. Winners here have included many of the sport's biggest names: Armour, Hogan, Cotton, Player, and Watson. There are three courses, the most famous of which is the breathtaking Championship Course, ranked among the very best in the world. The choice Burnside course is full of historical interest and local color, as well as being tough and interesting. The Buddon course, designed by Peter Allis and Dave Thomas, is recommended for links novices. 20 Links Parade, Carnoustie, Angus, DD7 7JF. 01241/802270; www.carnoustiegolflinks.co.uk. Panmure Golf Club. Down the road from the famous Carnoustie Golf Links, this traditional course offers an excellent challenge with its seaside setting, undulating greens, and sometimes excruciating—but always entertaining—burrows. The signature 6th is named after British Open Championship winner Ben Hogan, who practiced here prior to his triumphant tournament at Carnoustie in 1953.
