Bus Travel

The bus is a viable way to get around in Russia, although not the most comfortable. Sometimes a bus is the only way to travel between cities, but if there is another option available, use it. The fare for intercity bus travel is comparable to train travel. It usually takes about an hour longer by bus, since Moscow and other Russian cities have notoriously bad traffic. It depends on where you take the bus from, but now busses leaving from Moscow are relatively comfortable. They are about the level of Greyhound busses, and some even have toilets. They are air conditioned and heated in the winter. This, however, is not the case all over Russia, and some intercity busses could be much older, without air conditioning and with old small seats. The buses are relatively clean, but that is not the case all the time.
