São Pedro de Sintra

This little hillside village is most famous for its fair, the Feira de São Pedro, held every second and fourth Sunday of the month in the vast Praça Dom Fernando II (also called the Largo da Feira), where stalls are set up under the plane trees. Dating from the time of the Christian Reconquest, the fair is one of Portugal's best, with livestock and agricultural displays as well as local crafts, antiques, and food for sale. Even on nonfair days, it's worth coming to São Pedro to see the village church in its own enclosed little square. There are also several good restaurants, making this a pleasant lunch stop.
