Train

NSB, Norwegian State Railways, has five main lines originating from Oslo S (Oslo Central Station). Its 4,000 km (2,500 miles) of track connect all main cities as far north as Bodø and Fauske. Train tickets can be purchased in railway stations. Many travelers assume rail passes guarantee seats on the trains they wish to ride. Not so. You need to book seats ahead even if you are using a rail pass.

NSB trains are clean, comfortable, and punctual. Most have special compartments for travelers with disabilities and for families with children younger than age two. First- and second-class tickets are available. Most trains offer free Wi-Fi.

Norway's longest rail route runs north across the Arctic Circle. The southern line hugs the coast to Stavanger, while the stunning western line crosses Hardangervidda, the scenic plateau between Oslo and Bergen. An eastern line to Stockholm links Norway with Sweden, while another southern line through Göteborg, Sweden, is the main connection with continental Europe. Narvik, north of Bodø, is the last stop on Sweden's Ofot line, the world's northernmost rail system, which runs from Stockholm via Kiruna.
