Why We Like It

It’s affordable. It’s clean. And it’s in the Canal District.

Fodor's Expert Review

If you're just looking for a place to hang your hat and get a quiet night's sleep, this family-run property will do. While the décor won’t be winning any prizes, the 1906 redbrick inn is on a peaceful street within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum and the Heineken Experience.

You Should Know Thanks to Amsterdam’s recent hotel boom, there are better options for the same price in the area now. Check out boutique option Hotel V Frederiksplein, for instance.

Room

Old-fashioned yet tidily kept guest rooms with lots of windows come in many varieties, from snug singles to family rooms that sleep up to four (kids under 2 stay for free!). Standard rooms come with free WiFi, flat-screen TVs and coffee- and tea making facilities. Sadly, there is no air conditioning, but windows do open.

Tip All 28 rooms can be reached by elevator, which is unusual for Amsterdam hotels located in this type of building.

Bathroom

Private bathrooms come with showers and all the basic amenities, including colorful Be Different bathroom products.

Lobby

Dated and uninviting, this is more of a lobby to breeze through than hang out in, but it does have a 24-hour reception.

Dining

A good-quality breakfast buffet (not included in all rates), which may include pancakes, bacon and eggs, fresh fruit and croissants, is served in the breakfast room.

Drinking

Yes, there is a hotel bar, but with so many cozy options in the area, do go exploring.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Hotel Nicolaas Witsen is located in the Eastern Canal District, with good access to the Albert Cuyp market and Heineken Experience as well as nightlife hub Leidseplein and the Big Three museums. Several trams stop nearby.

Restaurants

Why not try Indonesian rijsttafel (“rice table”) a feast of flavors from the Netherlands’ favorite adopted cuisine at Tempo Doeloe (7-minute walk)? Go Dutch–at least as far as cuisine type is concerned–at Restaurant Floreyn (13-minute walk)? Or soak up some authentic Art Deco atmosphere at Café Americain (16-minute walk) while tucking into “accessible brasserie classics with a twist”.

Bars

For a slice of local history, a 5-minute walk will take you to Café Oosterling, which has been owned by the Oosterling family since 1897. If you find yourself wondering why the bar’s so low, it was originally used as a shop counter to trade coffee, tea, and spices from the Dutch East India Company. If you’re looking for the convivial atmosphere of a typical Dutch “brown café”, there’s Café De Wetering (9-minute walk).
