Madonna di Campiglio
The chichi winter resort of Madonna di Campiglio vies with Cortina d'Ampezzo as the most fashionable place for young Italians to ski and be seen in the Dolomites. Madonna's popularity is well deserved, with 39 lifts connecting more than 120 km (75 mi) of well-groomed ski runs. The resort itself is a modest 5,000 feet above sea level, but the downhill runs, summer hiking paths, and mountain-biking trails venture high up into the surrounding peaks (including Pietra Grande at 9,700 feet). Madonna's cachet is evident in its well-organized lodging, skiing, and trekking facilities.
