Puglia, Basilicata, and Calabria Travel Guide

Aliano

This remote village off the SS598 in the center of Basilicata's empty interior was the site of Carlo Levi's internment during 1936 and 1937. Not significantly different from any of the countless villages scattered over the featureless clay gullies and outcrops stretching out on

all sides, Aliano (called Gagliano by Levi) has not altered much, and readers can identify the church, the piazza where the Fascist mayor addressed the impassive peasants, and the timeless views.
